VIENNA — During the “presbyopia game changers” symposium at the ESCRS meeting, Elizabeth Yeu, MD, gave an update on pharmacological treatment.

Topical eye drops for presbyopia, namely Vuity (pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution 1.25%, Allergan), have become available in the U.S. and are a welcome addition to the current options because they are easier, noninvasive and reversible.

“There is such a need for our aging patient population who do not want to wear reading glasses, and there really is no gap to fill besides reading glasses or intraocular lens therapy,” Yeu said. “We need this because patients are asking for this. They want that freedom.”

Patient selection with a thorough eye examination and proper counseling are mandatory, and Yeu gives pearls on how these drops should be utilized.
