Key takeaways:

  • A higher ADI score was linked with worse vision acuity after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair.
  • This adds to the discussion of how socioeconomic factors may affect vision outcomes.

In this Healio Video Perspective from the Vit-Buckle Society annual meeting, Sally S. Ong, MD, discusses a study that investigated potential predictors for worse visual acuity at 1 year after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair.

A novel finding that the researchers discovered included the association between national area deprivation index (ADI) score and worse visual acuity outcomes. Patients who had higher ADI scores who underwent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair were found to have worse best corrected visual acuity at 1-year follow-up after multivariate analysis, according to Ong.

“I think this really points to the importance of taking socioeconomic factors into account when you care for your patients in order to maximize their functional outcomes,” she said.
