Key takeaways:
- The Apthera small-aperture IOL is ideal in patients with low levels of astigmatism.
- The lens overcomes the problems of axis alignment.
SAN DIEGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ASCRS meeting, John A. Hovanesian, MD, FACS, speaks about the Apthera small-aperture IOL from Bausch + Lomb.
This lens, he said, is ideal for implantation in patients with low levels of astigmatism, for which there is no toric implant available. In addition, with low astigmatism it is often difficult to determine the implantation axis, and the typical toric implant is sensitive to deviation from the target axis, however small. With the Apthera lens, the axis does not matter, as shown by FDA study data.
“If I have patients with low astigmatism who also want some range of vision, and particularly if I am uncertain about the exact axis that I am correcting, the Apthera lens is a really good choice,” Hovanesian said.
