Key takeaways:

  • The myopia epidemic is increasing worldwide, and the prevalence of myopia-related visual impairment is mounting.
  • High myopia is a risk factor for severe ocular morbidities.

VILAMOURA, Portugal — At the ESCRS winter meeting, Serge Resnikoff, MD, PhD, chair of the International Myopia Institute, discusses myopia, an issue that cuts across all subspecialties in ophthalmology.

The myopia epidemic is increasing worldwide, and the number of high myopes is increasing even faster because the age of onset is coming earlier in life.

“What we used to call school myopia is becoming preschool myopia, and this is leaving many more years of life for people to develop myopia,” he said. “This has big implications. The first implication is that the number of people with myopia who don’t have the appropriate correction and are visually impaired is around 150 million people in the world. The second implication is that high myopia is an important risk factor for ocular morbidities.”
