Key takeaways:
- Astigmatism is highly prevalent in cataract surgery patients, and toric IOLs can effectively correct it.
- Only a small percentage of patients are implanted with these IOLs due to cost issues.
VILAMOURA, Portugal — At the ESCRS winter meeting, Filomena Ribeiro, MD, PhD, ESCRS president-elect, advocates for wider use of toric IOLs in cataract surgery.
“Toric IOLs are the best choice for correcting astigmatism in cataract surgery. We know that astigmatism is very prevalent in these patients, but the truth is that still we have only 15% of the cases implanted with toric IOLs in Europe,” she said.
Cost is the main issue and needs to be discussed to give patients what they deserve.
