Key takeaways:
- Younger presbyopic myopes have difficulties in finding a good option for their vision.
- The ArtiPlus phakic IOL may be a solution, as shown by the interim outcomes of a multicenter study.
VILAMOURA, Portugal — In this Healio Video Perspective at the ESCRS winter meeting, José L. Güell, MD, speaks about the use of phakic IOLs in presbyopic myopes.
There is an age span, between 40 and 60 years old, in which presbyopic myopes have difficulties in finding a good option. Corneal refractive surgery will make IOL power calculations difficult if they need cataract surgery at a later stage, and refractive lens exchange will expose them to a higher risk for retinal detachment.
“Phakic IOLs may play a significant role in this particular group of patients,” he said.
Güell is currently coordinating a multicenter study evaluating in this age group the ArtiPlus IOL (Ophtec), an iris claw phakic lens that incorporates the multifocal optic technology of the Precizon IOL into the Artiflex platform, which has proven safety and efficacy over more than 2 decades.
“My experience has been extremely positive because I can escape from doing corneal refractive surgery, I can escape from doing crystalline lens surgery, and I am getting extremely good results regarding uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision,” he said.
