KOLOA, Hawaii — It is important for eye surgeons of all subspecialties to evolve their surgical techniques throughout their career, a presenter here said.
One step that specialists can take to prevent their surgical techniques from stagnating is to take time off from their own practices to discuss and observe different approaches in person, Angelo Tsirbas, MD, said at Hawaiian Eye 2023.
“Often, people will speak about things at meetings or give lectures, and that's interesting, but the best way to learn is to actually visit them,” he said.
Additionally, it is important for specialists to practice analyzing problems that may arise in surgery to allow for the evolution of their technique, as well as to keep an open mind to new and innovative surgeries.
It is important for surgeons not to perform an operation for their entire career in the same way they did when they finished their fellowship, Tsirbas said.
“It is important to grow and change and expand your horizons, and not think that the way that you did it, or the way that you learned in your fellowship, is the only way,” he said.
