NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective from OSN New York, Uday Devgan, MD, offers tips for surgeons to avoid and rescue phacoemulsification wound burns that may arise during cataract surgery.
“Phaco wound burns can happen when you don’t have enough irrigating fluid cooling down the phaco needle,” he said. “Remember that friction causes a lot of heat. If you don’t have fluid surrounding it or if the needle is pushed up against the corneal tissue ... that can lead to a wound burn in the matter of a second, and that can cause the cornea to become very irregular.”
