BLOG: Advantages of training in a big city

Training in a big city — for myself, New York City — has been an incredibly busy and challenging but rewarding experience.
Not only is there a large volume of patients to see in clinic, but the wide breadth of pathology encountered on a day-to-day basis has been a fundamental part of my learning. For example, here at Weill Cornell, we manage patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome on nearly a weekly basis. I have had the opportunity to not only develop my skills of recognizing and evaluating challenging diagnoses but also learning the skills needed to run an efficient practice. Another benefit of training in a big city is that it draws in physicians from around the world. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from world-renowned ophthalmologists both in clinic and in the operating room.
Life outside work is also great. NYC has a lot to offer with countless restaurants, shows, sporting events, concerts and other things happening daily. Having grown up in the suburbs, the city life was definitely a big but welcomed change. All the sounds, smells and liveliness of the city have really grown on me over the years. As I finish my final year of training, I feel prepared and excited to move on to the next step in my career.
