MONTEREY, Calif. — On the road to becoming vice president of global strategic marketing for J&J Surgical Vision, Nikki Sidi, MBA, has learned some lessons.

“Along the journey, I’ve learned five things,” Sidi told colleagues at the Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium.

First, embrace change quickly, be a change agent, and lead through change, because that is where the opportunities are, she said.

“Get on that change curve quickly and focus on finding the edges of your comfort zone. Growth happens when you’re uncomfortable. No one grows when they’re comfortable and things are going well,” Sidi said.

Second, and most important for Sidi, is to “believe in yourself,” even when others feel differently.

“Find your voice. Trust your gut. We have good intuition, many of us. Listen to it and let go of that which doesn’t serve you,” Sidi said.

Third, show up.

“Life is short. If you’re going to do something, commit. Be all in,” she said. “Even when the challenges are tough, that is when you lean in even more.”

Fourth, invest in people.

“Best people, best outcomes. You can’t do it alone,” Sidi said. “And, this is where investing in diversity makes a really big difference. Surround yourself with others who complement you, not compliment you.”

Quality thinking comes from quality relationships, she said.

“The basis of every good decision, every good business plan, every good growth plan is really solid thinking, and that thinking happens when you’ve got really good relationships. So, invest in the people around you,” Sidi said. “Hire the people who are going to do the job after you better than you. That helps advance everybody. Their success becomes your success. Find the best people, and the best people are different people.”

Finally, think big.

“Solve big problems. Dream big. Imagine the world transformed by your ideas,” Sidi said. “Ophthalmology is so powerful because restoring sight is so powerful. We can dream big and think big together.”
