Bascom Palmer maintains top ophthalmology hospital status
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been named the best ophthalmology hospital in the United States for the 19th straight year by U.S. News & World Report.
Wills Eye Hospital ranked second and Wilmer Eye Institute third, maintaining the top three rankings from 2021.

“Our professional team is dedicated to delivering the best possible vision care to patients throughout our diverse community and around the world,” Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, said in a press release. “Our unwavering focus on excellence also drives our integrated approach to research and education, as well as clinical care.”
Making a jump into this year’s top 10 is the John A. Moran Eye Center, which placed 11th in the previous ranking.
U.S. News & World Report has been releasing its Best Hospitals rankings since 1990. For the first time, the 2022-2023 list uses an expanded list of health equity measures to highlight hospitals that provide more care to patients with lower incomes.
In ophthalmology, the top 10 hospitals are:

- Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Philadelphia
- Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
- Mass Eye and Ear, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
- Stein and Doheny Eye Institutes, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
- Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina
- University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa
- University of Michigan Health Kellogg Eye Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan
- UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
- John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, Salt Lake City
