There are a number of tools and programs cataract surgeons can use to improve their efficiency and workflow, according to a presentation at Real World Ophthalmology.

Cathleen McCabe, MD, detailed some of the innovations she has used to improve her efficiency and accuracy, including surgical planning software such as Veracity (Zeiss), which pulls all of the necessary information from the electronic health record. She then makes a streamlined surgical plan for each patient.

“There’s no transcription. You’re not going to make any errors that way,” she said. “You can have it programed with your favorite primary and backup lenses, where you want to target, what nomograms you want to use.”

Once a plan is in place, the program provides a diagram to keep everyone on the same page, McCabe said. Having all of the information in one place makes the surgical process more accurate.

McCabe said previous studies have found that planning software can save surgeons a lot of time, including one study in which it was found that surgeons who performed 10 cases per week could potentially save 30 minutes per week or 2 hours per month if 10% of the cases were post-refractive.

“That’s a significant amount of time,” McCabe said. “That’s time for you, your staff, maybe even a full-time equivalence of you owning your own practice.”
