With a total of 200,672 procedures, laser vision correction procedure volume increased by 5.3% in the first quarter of 2022 over the fourth quarter of 2021, according to a report from the Refractive Surgery Council.
“Encouragingly, our surgeons report that consumer demand is stable, with post-pandemic energy around self-improvement continuing in spite of the complexities around the pandemic and the tightening economy,” Jim Wachtman, chairman of the Refractive Surgery Council (RSC), said in a press release.
The RSC is an association of leading vision correction experts, including physician thought leaders, representatives from all major industries in the field, as well as national and international medical organizations. By supporting clinical research and educational projects, the RSC ensures consumers have access to the latest and most accurate information.
The procedure volume report is based on data regularly gathered from leading refractive device manufacturers and combines data from LASIK, SMILE and PRK procedures.
In the release, Vance Thompson, MD, said the pandemic “threw a switch” and changed people’s priorities. “They may think about having surgery like LASIK for a long time, but, once they commit, they want it yesterday,” he said.
