WASHINGTON — Growth in the ophthalmic device market will accelerate over the next 2 to 3 years due to the reduction of COVID-19-driven backlogs, according to a presenter here.
“Innovation has returned and will continue,” Chuck Adams, of Citi, said during a keynote lecture at Eyecelerator@ASCRS.
Adams said to expect increased emerging market penetration and the premiumization of implantable and contact lenses. While the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine is concerning, he said, it should not present a meaningful headwind for the majority of ophthalmic device players.
“Ophthalmology continues to be one of the most attractive subsegments in medtech, with strong underlying tailwinds to help drive continued growth,” Adams said.
Adams said there is currently a convergence occurring in health care between consumers and health care providers.
“Many of you are communicating directly with your patients, who are very well-informed consumers of health care,” he said. “They are only going to become better informed. They already have opinions, which may or may not always be right, but their opinions will play a bigger and bigger role relative to, when they walk into a doctor’s office, what they are going to be demanding.”
