Established ophthalmologists to lend experience to peers in early career

Young ophthalmologists will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the clinical, practical and personal realms of ophthalmology from their well-established peers at the virtual Real World Ophthalmology meeting.

Scheduled for April 2, the meeting, entitled “Tell Me Your Secrets,” will showcase keynote speakers in informal settings that allow for participant interaction, including Ike K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC, in an “Ask Me Anything” session, Julia A. Haller, MD, in a fireside chat called “A Conversation With the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief,” and Uday Devgan, MD, in a special feature, “CataractCoach.com: UnEdited.” The meeting promises to allow young ophthalmologists to engage with these world-renowned ophthalmologists in a unique way.

“Real World Ophthalmology is a physician-led effort dedicated to helping young ophthalmologists succeed in early practice. The biannual meeting provides curated content that is time sensitive and offers real-world insight and pearls of wisdom for clinicians who want to get a head start in their careers,” Lisa M. Nijm, MD, JD, the founder and creator of Real World Ophthalmology, told Healio/OSN. “Tell Me Your Secrets will build upon the success of our first meeting and focuses on topics in business, clinical innovation and areas of personal growth that our audience identified would be most helpful to them in early practice. Our goal is to help fill the gap between what we learned in training and what we now realize we need to know in practice. It’s unlike any other virtual meeting that you’ve attended.”

The Real World Ophthalmology meeting is held biannually and provides real-world insight and pearls of wisdom for clinicians who want to advance their careers. The inaugural meeting in fall 2021 received acclaim for its breadth of faculty, engaging and entertaining format, and unique topics geared for young ophthalmologists. There is no cost for ophthalmologists in residency, fellowship or the first 10 years of practice.

The agenda spans the breadth of ophthalmology subspecialties and includes more than 65 well-experienced speakers in an engaging, educational forum with ample opportunity for discussion, questions, collaboration and networking.

“We have an incredible all-star faculty of well-established ophthalmologists who have come together with the same goal — to give back to the next generation in a big way,” Nijm said.

A sampling of topics includes what to look for in a fellowship candidate, how to negotiate a job contract, managing complex subspecialty cases, coding changes in 2022, how to build a premium practice, improving patient satisfaction, avoiding embezzlement, cutting-edge treatments and advice for achieving a fulfilling career.

“We are constantly evaluating our educational offerings to see what more we can do. For instance, based on feedback, we added 20 Lunch and Learn Networking Lounges with our internationally recognized faculty to allow small group ‘face-to-face’ discussion on a variety of important topics. We also will be honoring four residents and fellows and four young ophthalmologists in practice with awards for their contributions to the field. There are new contests, trivia questions and a scavenger hunt filled with ophthalmic-themed prizes such as surgical instruments, lenses and coaching sessions to help young eye surgeons as they begin practice,” Nijm said. “We can’t wait for April 2, and we hope to see you all there.”

Physicians can register without cost for the meeting while space is available at www.realworldophthalmology.com/tickets.

Healio is an official media partner for the meeting.
