ORLANDO — With the recent approval of Allergan’s Vuity presbyopia-correcting eye drop, many patients have been asking their ophthalmologists about the drop’s availability and effectiveness, and a panel discussed their experience here.
During a panel on presbyopia-correcting technologies at Cataract Surgery: Telling It Like It Is, William B. Trattler, MD, said, “We are seeing a really strong demand in our practice for drops. I’m interested in what discussions the panel is hearing from their patients and their thoughts.”
“We definitely have patients coming in all the time looking for solutions for their presbyopia, and now it’s nice to have an alternate option to offer those patients,” Jennifer M. Loh, MD, said.
“Especially for those patients who are not right for surgery, those plano presbyopes, this is a fantastic option to be able to offer those patients,” Karolinne M. Rocha, MD, PhD, added.
“Another feature with these drops is we have what we call the ‘Starbucks generation’ where everyone wants the most convenient thing ... so whatever is most convenient, that is what people are going to want, so that’s a real key factor in wanting these drops,” Mitchell C. Shultz, MD, said.
“I think a real key is reversibility,” I. Paul Singh, MD, said. “The worst thing that can happen is a patient doesn’t like the drops and doesn’t use them anymore. I think the comfort level of not having to worry about a permanent solution really gives a confidence in trying them.”
“This is lifetime presbyopia management,” John D. Sheppard, MD, said. “I’m really interested in the disappointed pseudophake, who years ago just got a regular lens and they’re mad because now everyone can get a fancy lens, and you can make them less presbyopic with a drop.”
