Advances may ease difficulties of visual field testing

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Visual field testing is important for detecting progression in patients with glaucoma, but some may have difficulty with the test process, according to a speaker here.

“This is very true for the full threshold patterns, which require 15 minutes per eye,” Monica Ertel, MD, PhD, said at Hawaiian Eye 2022.

Ertel discussed developments in visual field strategies, including visual field algorithms. The SITA Standard protocol, she said, reduces test time by approximately 50% compared with full threshold testing. SITA Fast is 30% quicker than SITA Standard, and SITA Faster has an average time of 2 minutes per eye, she said.

Looking to the future, Ertel said that tablet-based testing has shown promise for visual field monitoring, and virtual reality headsets may be useful for glaucoma screening as well as at-home testing.

“Certainly, there’s great utility for screening with some of these virtual reality headsets,” she said. “I think as we continue to incorporate them, we’ll get more data that allows us to really refine the strategy and improve the reliability of this test.”
