Laser vision correction procedures totaled 190,509 in the fourth quarter of 2021, marking a 32% year-to-date increase over 2020, according to a press release from the Refractive Surgery Council.

“We can confidently state LASIK, SMILE and other laser vision correction procedures are trending upwards,” Jim Wachtman, chairman of the Refractive Surgery Council, said in the release. “Looking at the historical data, it is clear 2021’s performance is reflective of a renewed consumer interest in and demand for the procedures, not just about catching up from pandemic-related disruptions.”

More than 833,000 laser vision correction procedures were performed in 2021, according to the release. This total is the highest since the organization began tracking the number of LASIK, SMILE and PRK procedures in 2015.

The report is based on data from leading refractive device manufacturers.
