WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Marguerite B. McDonald, MD, a corneal refractive surgeon at OCLI Vision, discussed a thulium laser-based presbyopia correction technique from her Philip M. Corboy, MD, Memorial Award Lecture here.

“I also introduced most people to Opti-K, which is a novel form of thermal keratoplasty,” McDonald said. “It creates 16 lesions in the mid-peripheral cornea with the thulium laser. There are no epithelial defects; it just heats the anterior stroma. The effect wears off completely in 1 to 2 years ... but an indefinite number of enhancements are possible.”
