Guided corneal relaxing incision system on horizon for residual astigmatism correction

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — A novel guided corneal relaxing incision system aims to provide reliable astigmatism correction for small amounts of refractive error following cataract surgery, according to a presenter here.
“Today in the United States, we have no toric lenses available for lower powers,” Sheri L. Rowen, MD, FACS, said at Hawaiian Eye 2022. “Coming soon, and this is in development, will be a guided corneal relaxing incision system. It will be a comprehensive astigmatic-correcting solution system that should produce predictable and repeatable arcuate incisions.”
The system is less invasive than LASIK and will be able to correct astigmatism less than 1.5 D, Rowen said.
The system will come with a web-based surgical planning decision support system, and surgeons will be able to import tomography in order to get a personalized nomogram, Rowen said.
The hand-held system is comprised of three parts, including twin-guarded cutting blades, templates to manipulate degrees of arcuate cuts and a suction base to stabilize coupling.
To get the most out of the system, Rowen recommended first performing a cataract procedure to address the primary issue. Between 1 and 3 months later, the system can be used to address residual astigmatism.
“You’ll have greater stability and healing by then, more accurate measurements. You will assess any postop lens or cylinder shifting and choose your desired postop correction,” Rowen said. “The treatment can be a two-part process that delivers no surprises and happy patients.”
