Lindstrom Leadership Lecture honors Link as ‘influential business leader’
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — William J. Link, PhD, was celebrated during the inaugural Lindstrom Leadership Award and Lecture today at Hawaiian Eye 2022.

The award was created by The Wyanoke Group to honor Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, and recognize a leader in the field of ophthalmology who has contributed to nonclinical advances in the specialty.

“Besides his clinical contributions, of which you are all aware, many may not quite appreciate just how much of a hand Dick has had in improving patient care not just through the development and innovation of new technology, but also through advocacy of our profession through societies such as ASCRS,” David F. Chang, MD, said.
Speaking on behalf of Vance Thompson, MD, who was unable to attend the meeting, Chang said that Link was selected for the award because of his work as an “influential business leader.”
“When you combine Bill Link's uncanny talent for spotting and guiding the development of new technologies with his inner strength, will and humility, you have a leader who has truly advanced ophthalmology,” Chang said on behalf of Thompson.
During his presentation, Link discussed the importance of innovation and investment in the field of ophthalmology.
“There is an ecosystem of innovation that is as solid and advanced in ophthalmology as any other medical specialty,” Link said.
Link also stressed the importance of not being afraid to fail, using baseball as a metaphor for innovation.
“We have to have the courage and commitment to get up knowing that periodically we're going to ground out and strike out,” Link said.
