NEW ORLEANS — According to Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, refractive cataract surgery is a win for patients, society, ophthalmologists and industry alike.
During a keynote lecture at Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, Lindstrom said patient benefits of refractive surgery range from longer working careers and fewer falls to a lower dependence on spectacles. Refractive surgery also offers ophthalmologists an opportunity to improve their skills and deliver more value, he said.
“It has provided an opportunity for us around the world to increase our opportunities for revenue in an ever-demanding external environment,” Lindstrom said.
Refractive surgery offers fresh opportunities for industry, including product development centered on refractive outcomes, a higher demand for advanced diagnostic and surgical products, and advanced technology that leads to incremental revenue opportunities. Lindstrom said that due to economic constraints on refractive surgery, including the inability of some patients to afford the costs and other patients not seeing the value of surgery, data suggest there is still room for additional growth.
Market drivers that are key for the continued growth of the refractive surgery business include patient needs, demographic trends, physicians’ interests and needs, and industry revenue overall. Lindstrom also said that new technology is “changing the value equation” by offering more precision in diagnostic and surgical techniques as well as new IOL options.
“We are going to keep getting better and better and better as the innovation cycle, which is fueled by capital and human investment, our personal investment in this arena, continues to allow this area to grow,” he said.
