Patients satisfied with presbyopia-correcting IOL outcomes

Patients implanted with a wavefront-shaping presbyopia-correcting IOL reported high levels of satisfaction, according to a study presented at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
Miguel Teus, MD, PhD, presented interim data from a study evaluating the real-world visual outcomes among patients who received the AcrySof IQ Vivity and AcrySof IQ Vivity toric extended vision IOLs (Alcon). The analysis included data from 69 patients who were enrolled at Spanish clinics.
Researchers assessed binocular uncorrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near, patient-reported spectacle independence, patient-reported satisfaction and patient-reported visual disturbances at 3 to 6 months.
At follow-up, the mean Snellen equivalent was 20/20 at distance, approximately 20/25 at intermediate and approximately 20/32 at near.
“Quite nice visual results, visual acuity for distance and for intermediate,” Teus said.
For distance vision, 94.1% of patients reported never or rarely needing to wear glasses, while 88.3% reported never or rarely needing to wear glasses at arm’s length and 63.3% reported never or rarely needing to wear glasses for up close.
For patient-reported visual disturbances, 85.3% did not see halos, 91.2% did not see glare and 91.2% did not see starbursts in the previous 7 days.
Additionally, 94.1% of patients were satisfied with the procedure.
“In this real-world study, the patients implanted with the Vivity spheric or toric lens had very good visual acuity outcomes at all distances, high rates of spectacle independence — especially at distance and intermediate, but also for near vision — and very low occurrence of visual disturbances and very high levels of patient satisfaction,” Teus said.
