Lenticule extraction procedure demonstrates good correction of myopic astigmatism

Patients who underwent myopic astigmatism correction with the SmartSight lenticule extraction procedure experienced good visual and refractive outcomes at 12 months, according to a study.

“Lenticule extraction has gained popularity in recent years,” Samuel Arba Mosquera, PhD, said in a presentation at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting. “In this case, we used a system that works slightly above the threshold for plasma formation, and we tried to benefit from the low-energy regimen.”

Researchers evaluated 12-month refractive and visual outcomes of patients who underwent small-incision guided human cornea treatment with the SmartSight procedure using the ATOS femtosecond laser (Schwind eye-tech-solutions).

The study included 221 eyes of 114 consecutive patients. At baseline, manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was –6.26 ± 2.17 D, and mean astigmatism was 0.92 ± 0.68 D. Monocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) were assessed before and after the procedure.

At 12 months, MRSE was 0.48 ± 0.31 D, while mean astigmatism was 0.13 ± 0.18 D.

Mosquera said that 95% of eyes postoperatively had the same UDVA or better compared with CDVA preoperatively. Additionally, only 1% of eyes lost one line of CDVA after the procedure.

Mosquera said the findings show that astigmatism correction with the SmartSight procedure may provide good results in terms of efficacy, safety, predictability and visual outcomes.

“We demonstrated that myopic astigmatism was good at 12 months of follow-up,” he said. “We have also seen that astigmatism correction was similar to what LASIK can provide.”
