The Gisbert Richard Lecture, delivered at the virtual Euretina congress by Heinrich Heimann, MD, focused on visual function after retinal detachment surgery.

“Looking at the topic critically, this is one of the fields of medicine where not much improvement has been achieved over the past decades,” he said in the video.

Despite the higher number of competent surgeons and the better management of complicated cases, one-third of patients after successful surgery are not able to read. He discussed the reasons behind these suboptimal outcomes and about prevention and treatment, comparing the outcomes of vitrectomy with those of pneumatic retinopexy and scleral buckling.
