Real World Ophthalmology will virtually present its inaugural meeting, entitled “Real World Ophthalmology: Top 10 Things I Wish I Knew Sooner,” on Sept. 18.

The meeting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT with an agenda aimed at young ophthalmologists. There is no cost for ophthalmologists in training or in their first 10 years of practice.

Lisa M. Nijm

“Real World Ophthalmology is a physician-led effort dedicated to helping young ophthalmologists succeed in early practice. The biannual meeting provides curated content that is time sensitive and offers real-world insight and pearls of wisdom for clinicians who want to get a head start in their careers,” Lisa M. Nijm, MD, JD, CEO of Women in Ophthalmology and the founder and creator of Real World Ophthalmology, told Healio/OSN. “This first meeting will include topics such as finding the right job, negotiating contracts, incorporating the latest technologies, building a practice, passing your boards, creating a financial plan and avoiding burnout. Our goal is to help fill the gap between what we learned in training and what we now realize we need to know in practice. It’s unlike any other virtual meeting that you’ve attended.”

The meeting is designed to be highly interactive, with 55 speakers, Q&A in every session, pop-up trivia questions and a scavenger hunt. Prizes include an Apple iPad, a RoboMarker, Volk lenses, SLACK ophthalmology books, coaching sessions, an Oftalmo University course, OphthoQuestions subscription, Medelita scrubs, SimulEYE training model, Amazon gift cards and more.

Additionally, the first 500 people to register and participate in the meeting will receive a Real World Ophthalmology care package in the mail after the event.

“We have an incredible all-star faculty of well-established ophthalmologists who have come together with the same goal — to give back to the next generation in a big way,” Nijm said. “Attendees will have an opportunity to have their questions answered live by the experts and network in a friendly environment.”

Keynote speakers Tamara Fountain, MD, and Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, will share their pearls of wisdom for young ophthalmologists and answer questions from the audience in rapid fire, similar to Reddit’s popular “Ask Me Anything.” The complete agenda and faculty for the event can be found on the meeting’s website, www.RealWorldOphthalmology.com.

Real World Ophthalmology will also recognize exemplary ophthalmologists in training or in the first 10 years of practice for their outstanding contributions to the field. There are eight awards in total: excellence in patient care, remarkable research, exemplary teacher, incredible innovation and scientific contribution, inspiring humanitarian, exceptional leadership, extraordinary mentorship, and outstanding professionalism and ethics.

“Nominations will be accepted until Sept. 12 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Award winners will be featured on the website, honored at the meeting and receive a monetary prize as well,” Nijm said.

Physicians can register for the meeting while space is available at www.realworldophthalmology.com/tickets.
