The American Academy of Ophthalmology will require all in-person attendees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 for its annual meeting in New Orleans in November, according to AAO guidance.

Attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination, with a vaccine approved by the FDA or WHO, before arriving to the meeting site. Accepted vaccines include Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen, Moderna, AstraZeneca-Oxford and Sinopharm.

“We are devising protocols that are simple and that we can adapt to public health information and local health rules,” David W. Parke II, MD, CEO of the AAO, said in a video announcement. “The Academy board of trustees has determined that every meeting attendee must provide proof of vaccination before entering the convention facility.”

The AAO is working with a third-party vendor to manage the proof of vaccination process and will share verification instructions by Wednesday, Sept. 15, the guidance said.

Unvaccinated individuals can participate in the meeting virtually.
