LAS VEGAS — The PanOptix trifocal IOL provided good visual outcomes at 1-month, according to research presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Jerry G. Hu, MD, from Texas Eye and Laser Center said the study was originally intended to be presented at ASCRS 2020 but got delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“By now, most of us have had first-hand experience with this implant,” he said. “It’s no longer quite timely, but it’s still good, qualitative work, and the findings are still clinically relevant.”

Researchers obtained 1-month, postoperative results from 353 eyes that underwent PanOptix trifocal IOL (Alcon) implantation. They compared the results to predicted refraction using ORA intraoperative aberrometry.

After exclusions, researchers assessed data from 218 eyes in their final analysis.

A 1-month postop, mean monocular uncorrected distance and near visual acuity was 20/24. Additionally, 47.7% of patients were 20/20 or better, 84.9% were 20/25 or better, 95% were 20/30 or better and 99.5% were 20/40 or better.

The mean binocular UCDVA was 20/22. Additionally, 62.8% of patients were 20/20 or better, 97.4% were 20/25 or better, and 100% were 20/30 or better.

At 1-month, the mean monocular uncorrected near visual acuity was J1, and for binocular it was J1+.

Hu and colleagues also found that the overall mean 1-month postoperative spherical equivalent (SE) of the manifest reaction (MR) was 0.01±0.05 D.

“The new PanOptix Trifocal IOL can deliver excellent postoperative visual outcomes at 1 month, and the use of ORA intraoperative aberrometry can help obtain a very high degree of refractive stability,” Hu said.
