Veritas vision system allows enhanced surgeon performance in challenging cataract cases

ROME — Enhanced fluidics and improved ergonomics make phacoemulsification with the Veritas vision system from Johnson & Johnson Vision more efficient and safer in difficult cases, according to one surgeon.
“It has three distinctive features that make it unique: amazing fluidics and amazing ergonomics of the handpiece and, last but not least, delightful new ergonomics for the pedal,” Steven H. Dewey, MD, said at OSN Italy.
He showed on video one case of a very dense cataract in which he used a 500 mm Hg Venturi vacuum to lift, impale and aspirate the nucleus while maintaining a stable anterior chamber.
“It is just incredible you can do that with a stable chamber. With that level of vacuum, we bring the nucleus up, so we can impale it without pushing down on the capsule. Fragments are easily manipulated; they virtually disappear in no time. Followability is amazing,” he said.
The secret, he told the audience, is the dual-durometer aspiration tubing, which has a soft outer edge for improved maneuverability and a stiff inner wall with reduced diameter for enhanced chamber stability.
“This allows for higher working vacuum for improved efficiency, reducing aspiration outflow for Venturi and acting as a hardware harness for peristaltic,” Dewey said. “Honestly, this tubing is pretty revolutionary in terms of its ability to keep the chamber stable.”
Thanks to the pressurized infusion functionality of the system, he was able to keep the bottle at 120 cm, 40 cm higher than usual, increasing the infusion pressure by way of gravity.
In another case, Dewey was dealing with a small pupil and was still able to use a 500 mm Hg vacuum but with a lower 106 cm bottle height. The new swivel handpiece, which is lightweight and shorter, helped controlled maneuvering through the small pupil.
“It fits so well in your hand, with the tubing wrapped around your wrist, which takes away all the weight, and allows you to move freely and elegantly in these detailed, challenging cases,” he said.
The other innovation is the new foot pedal, ergonomically designed for more control of the system operations and improved comfort for all users.
“All the rest you need to see for yourself. It is really a well-designed, well-thought-out machine that I recommend highly,” Dewey said.
