American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery introduces more women leaders

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery has welcomed more women into leadership roles for 2021-2022, according to a press release.
Key changes in leadership are Marjan Farid, MD, who is now chair of the Cornea Clinical Committee, Cathleen McCabe, MD, chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee, and Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, MD, chair of the Young Eye Surgeons Clinical Committee.
“Many of these changes reflect the changing face of ophthalmologists,” Stephen H. Speares, ASCRS executive director, said in the release. “For example, ASCRS now has more women in leadership roles than ever before.”
Of the 26 current leadership positions in ASCRS, nine have been filled with women this term. When Healio/OSN asked Farid and Al-Mohtaseb about their new roles, they shared similar thoughts.
“I believe increasing diversity (gender, ethnic, etc.) in leadership positions will help promote inclusivity in the membership and in ophthalmology in general. Enhancing diversity in ophthalmology is critical, and these are great steps toward reaching that goal,” Al-Mohtaseb said. “I am humbled and honored to be asked to chair the YES committee this year.”
Farid added, “With this diversity, we will see more unique perspectives, ideas and progress in the years to come. We are on the right path, and we will see more diversity in the rank and file in the coming years.”
Can more be done?
“Always. There is always room for growth,” Farid said.
