Shields receives Philip M. Corboy, MD, award

WAILEA, Hawaii — M. Bruce Shields, MD, was awarded the Philip M. Corboy, MD, Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Ophthalmology at Hawaiian Eye 2021.
Shields was unable to attend the meeting but accepted the award by way of a recorded video.
“I sure wish we could be with you, but I’m grateful to the organizing committee of the Hawaiian Eye meeting that we can at least join you virtually, and I’m especially grateful for the honor of receiving the Philip Corboy Memorial Award,” Shields said. “I sincerely thank the committee for this honor.”
“This award, presented annually at the Hawaiian Eye meeting is given to an ophthalmologist who typifies a career of excellent, patient concern and compassion and in the profession itself,” Jeffrey Rutgard, MD, MS, the mission director of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation, said.
Shields graduated AOA from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in 1966 before serving a tour of duty in the Navy. During his career, Shields served as the director of glaucoma service at Duke University and as the Marvin L. Sears professor and chairman of the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences before retiring in 2011.
Shields has published 10 books, 36 chapters and more than 180 scientific papers in referred journals, Rutgard said. Shields Textbook of Glaucoma was cited as one of the 100 most important books in ophthalmology in 2000, Rutgard said.
The award, sponsored by Bausch + Lomb, was presented by the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.
