A new book, Illustrated Advanced Anterior Segment Surgery: A Step-by-Step Guide for Challenging Cases, will help general ophthalmologists expand their surgical skill sets and learn new techniques, according to one of its editors.

So much of surgery involves visualizing what to do in complex situations and cases. The book is a step-by-step guide to teach colleagues, trainees, subspecialists and comprehensive ophthalmologists important techniques and strategies for advanced anterior segment surgery, according to OSN Glaucoma Board Member and author/editor of the book Ike K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC.

“Rather than just doing a classic video of a microscope view, we’ve gone through and talked more about the instrumentation of a technique, the physics behind them and how holding instruments in the correct grip is key. This often isn’t discussed,” he said.

Ahmed, Xavier Campos-Möller, MD, Manjool Shah, MD, and Arsham Sheybani, MD, all served as authors/editors of the book, which was published by SLACK Books, a sister company of Healio.

The book is presented in a highly designed graphic style, with the authors creating a visual guide that emphasizes images and diagrams to provide instructions for certain surgical maneuvers.

“This book should apply to a broad group of surgeons, but we’ve also made it of interest to trainees as well. I see a group of surgeons who are in their first 10 years of practice, those who are getting out there and starting to venture into more complex cases, as gaining a lot from this book,” Ahmed said.

The book will help surgeons focus on advanced and complex surgical cases. It also should serve as a guide to teach surgeons how to properly hold instruments, maneuver them and be prepared for specific challenges during complex cases, he said.

Significant emphasis is placed on foundational concepts and advanced surgical techniques. Readers will find advice on ergonomics, hand positioning and instruments grips, as well as proper techniques to insert and remove iris hooks.

The editors also offer advice on how to perform a capsulorrhexis in the setting of weak zonules, how to repair an iridodialysis cleft and how to perform an intrascleral haptic fixation of a three-piece IOL.

Each chapter focuses on a specific technique, allowing surgeons to consult specific chapters before they perform a procedure. However, the first few chapters are introductory and will help orient readers so they know what to expect in the rest of the book, Ahmed said.

The book is presented in a novel and unique format, which is described in the introductory chapters.

“The best thing about this book is it’s something you don’t need to read cover to cover. If you have a case coming up with an iris repair, you can go right to the chapter and learn step by step,” he said.
