Vectored thermal pulsation improves visible meibomian gland structure

Eyes with meibomian gland dysfunction treated with vectored thermal pulsation experienced improved visible meibomian gland structure compared with eyes in a nontreatment control group.

The retrospective, single-masked cohort study included 48 eyes of 30 patients in a treatment group and 22 eyes of 13 patients in a control group. All eyes in the study had dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction. Eyes underwent treatment with the LipiFlow thermal pulsation system (Johnson & Johnson Vision).

Researchers evaluated visible meibomian gland structure between the two groups at baseline and at 1 year.

The morphometric meibomian gland pixelar analysis of dynamic meibomian imaging demonstrated that 100% of the treated eyes had a change in visible meibomian gland structure after treatment. After analysis, researchers found 69% of treated eyes showed an improvement in visible meibomian gland structure at 1 year after treatment compared with baseline. Only 27% of eyes in the control group had an improvement in visible meibomian gland structure at 1 year.

At 1 year after treatment, statistically significant improvements were observed in tear breakup time (P = .0001), corneal staining (P = .0063) and meibomian gland evaluation scores (P = .0038).
