Continued improvement of intraoperative image-guided technology and its integration into cataract surgery can improve patient outcomes and increase surgical efficiencies, according to a speaker.

“Image-guided technology, whether it is through integrated cataract suites like the Callisto (Carl Zeiss Meditec), Verion (Alcon) and TrueVision (Alcon), can be used for alignment, and aberrometry (ORA, Alcon) can be used for IOL selection and alignment. There are multiple iterations of this technology and they’re becoming more and more integrated as time passes,” Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, MD, Healio/OSN Cataract Surgery board member, said at the virtual OSN New York meeting.

Intraoperatively ophthalmologists can use this image-guided technology to optimize capsulorrhexis centration, IOL centration, wound and astigmatic keratotomy placement, and toric IOL alignment, Al-Mohtaseb said.

Both the Callisto and Verion systems can be used in capsulorrhexis centration, multifocal IOL centration, IOL alignment and arcuate and main incision placement, while the TrueVision system, which is not commercially available, can provide intraoperative alignment and is connected to topography and biometry units, she said.

The ORA is an intraoperative wavefront aberrometer that can take real-time aphakic and pseudophakic refractions. It can be used as an adjunct to preoperative measurements and can be effective in eyes with prior refractive surgery, extreme axial length and significant astigmatism, she said.

“There has been continued improvement of these technologies and a push toward integration and efficiency. I’m very personally excited about this technology. Obviously, price must be taken into account, but especially with this COVID crisis, efficiency has become paramount given all the extra steps necessary in the clinic and the OR,” she said.
