The WHO COVID-19 global literature database contained nearly 85,000 publications as of Sept. 23, but ophthalmologists are still working to discover patterns and effects the disease may have on eyes.

A recent database search returned 323 publications including the word “ocular,” 489 publications including the word “eye” and 231 publications including the word “ophthalmology.” The results represent increases of 46%, 39% and 36%, respectively, compared with an early August search.

Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, launched a survey as part of a nonconditional sponsorship from Thea Pharma in order to investigate how COVID-19 affects the eye.

“With time and with more data, we might be able to better clarify the relevance, frequency and causative mechanisms of these manifestations. It may be direct contact of the virus with the eye in some cases or a consequence of the inflammatory and immune-dysregulation processes triggered by the virus in the body,” Alió previously told Healio/OSN.

In the Aug. 25 cover story in Ocular Surgery News, Alió said it is difficult to determine the pathogenesis of the ophthalmic involvement of COVID-19. The survey may help collect evidence on how it affects the eye.
