Early feasibility study of Orion visual prosthesis system resumes

Second Sight Medical Products announced an early feasibility study of the Orion visual cortical prosthesis system has resumed.

The study, which includes six participants at two sites, was halted for in-person visits following clinical trial guidelines put in place in March due to COVID-19, according to a press release. Study visits have resumed at UCLA Medical Center, with Baylor College of Medicine expected to resume soon.

“We are delighted that the early feasibility study has restarted. The study, like many such investigations, was suspended as medical centers focused attention and resources on their COVID-19 response and to protect the health of study participants,” Matt Pfeffer, acting CEO of Second Sight, said in the release.

The first patient was implanted with Orion in January 2018. Study investigators presented 12-month results in June 2019, with positive primary and secondary outcomes.
