AMA issues CPT codes for implantation of artificial iris

The AMA has issued three CPT codes for artificial iris implantation, according to a press release from Veo Ophthalmics.

The Category III codes are 0616T, 0617T and 0618T and went into effect July 1.

In January, CMS granted transitional pass-through payment status to the CustomFlex artificial iris, which was approved by the FDA in 2018 to treat iris defects stemming from congenital aniridia, acquired defects or other conditions involving a missing or damaged iris.
“These CPT codes, combined with the transitional pass-through payment granted by CMS, expand patient access and further enable both surgeons and surgical facilities to appropriately provide this solution to their patients who suffer from symptomatic aniridia,” Ron Gilliland, president and CEO of Veo Ophthalmics, said in the release.
