AMA: Be guided by science
AMA President Susan R. Bailey, MD, believes in science.
In a statement from the AMA on CDC changes to COVID-19 testing guidance, Bailey said in a press release, “When the CDC updates a guidance, the agency should provide a rationale for the change. We urge CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services to release the scientific justification for this change in testing guidelines.”
At the virtual Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium, where Bailey delivered a keynote talk, she laid the foundation for the AMA’s position.

“The AMA has made it a point from the very beginning to stick up for science,” Bailey said. “That is something we have been committed to since our founding in the mid-1800s, when we were formed to combat the rapid quackery that was present in medicine at the time. So, we’ll continue to push our elected officials and government institutions to ensure that science and evidence is at the forefront of their policy decisions. Whether it involves issuing guidelines for state and local governments or working to develop a vaccine, it’s got to be about the evidence. ... The response I hear from physicians is universal, when it comes to protecting public health: We have to be guided by science.”
