In keeping with the enterprising spirit of Octane’s Ophthalmology Technology Summit, the meeting organizers are finding opportunities in their need to pivot to a totally virtual event.

The majority of the 2020 OTS content, now scheduled for Aug. 6 to 8, will be staged and streamed from Southern California as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, opening the possibility of reaching a greater number of participants than in previous years, according to Octane CEO Bill Carpou. He said this will be part of a longer-term strategy to build participation outside just Southern California in 2021 and beyond.

This year’s summit is changing the way Octane thinks about meetings moving forward. Beginning in 2021, every technology summit will have a hybrid component, allowing for attendees to register and attend from all over the country and globally. Beginning this year, all registered attendees will be able to access the catalog of presentations from the summit on demand, beginning the week of Aug. 10.

Artificial intelligence and how that technology may be employed in the future of ophthalmology is one of the key focuses for the conference. Anthony Chang, MD, MBA, MPH, MS, is giving a keynote speech detailing the technology’s potential future in ophthalmology.

“He’ll talk specifically about artificial intelligence in ophthalmology and the impact that will have on the future,” Carpou said.

Tom Mitro, president and chief operating officer of Aerie Pharmaceuticals, will emcee the meeting. Michael Severino, MD, vice chairman and president of AbbVie, will give a keynote interview detailing the potential impact of current innovations on ophthalmology.

Carpou is also scheduled to give a keynote detailing Octane’s growth and the state of ophthalmology amid the COVID-19 pandemic with Bill Link, PhD, managing partner, Flying L Partners, and Marty Waters, partner, Wilson Sonsini.

There will also be sponsored roundtables, virtual booths and virtual rooms to facilitate networking.

“Attendees have loved the format of the conference in years past; it’s a bit more intimate than some of the bigger ophthalmology conferences. It really gives people an ability to connect. That’s why we’re going to have these virtual rooms to allow people to do that networking,” Carpou said. “We’ve got a great following, and we would like to invite everybody to attend this year.”
