VIDEO: When treating AMD, ‘believe the B scans’
In this exclusive video, Christine A. Curcio, PhD, White-McKee endowed professor in ophthalmology in the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, explains how hyperreflective foci — which are commonly detected during OCT B scans of patients with age-related macular degeneration — are “huge risk factors for the progression to atrophy.”
Using cone and rod mediated vision, Curcio and her lab worked with clinicians to determine if there were “functional correlates to the presence of HRF,” and the findings were presented at this year’s virtual ARVO annual meeting.
“We should believe the B scans, they will help us win AMD,” Curcio said.
