LambdaVision, with implementation partner Space Tango, has been selected by NASA to receive $5 million to aid in the development of a vision restoration treatment, according to a press release.

The funds will support the development of a protein-based artificial retina to restore vision in patients who are blind or have lost sight due to advanced retinitis pigmentosa or, in the future, age-related macular degeneration.

The companies will explore the benefits of producing the artificial retina in microgravity on the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory. Production in microgravity may reduce the amount of materials needed for the artificial retina, with lower costs and an accelerated production time, according to LambdaVision researchers.

“Partnering with Space Tango and working closely with NASA continues to be an impactful experience that is providing new insight in the development of our articial retina, and we are condent that this work will one day benet patients who have lost their sight,” Jordan Greco, PhD, chief scientific ocer of LambdaVision said in the release. “It is also our hope that LambdaVision’s work will inspire new research and commercial product development that can help foster a thriving low-Earth orbit economy.”
