Traveling to South Africa to ask questions
Severe lens dislocation in Marfan syndrome. What's your approach? |
I'll be attending the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Congress in August, and for my lectures, I'm turning the tables: I'll be asking more questions than I'll be answering.
Ophthalmologists across the globe learn the same anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of the eye, but interestingly, they often approach clinical cases differently. One of the best ways to truly understand ocular pathology is to see how different ophthalmologists approach the same situation. With this in mind, I'll be bringing a bag full of great clinical cases in order to learn how surgeons with a different perspective handle them. One of these cases is depicted in this photo, showing a severely dislocated crystalline lens in a patient with Marfan syndrome.
I was encouraged to attend this meeting by Spencer Thornton, MD, who has been a friend and mentor for many years. He has been to this South African meeting many times and he has enjoyed it immensely. He wrote about it here. I'm even arranging a safari before the meeting and some sightseeing afterward.
The meeting will be held in Durban, South Africa, from August 18 to 21, 2011. If you've ever wanted to travel the world, go on a true safari, or even ask South African ophthalmologists how they'd approach a patient with Marfan Syndrome - this is your trip. I invite you to join me on this unforgettable trip. Please e-mail me at devgan@gmail.com for more information.
