I really enjoy the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting because it's a time where all the different subspecialties come together. In my daily practice, I don't often get to see the advances, new technology and surgical techniques in the retina, oculoplastics and pediatric ophthalmology worlds. But at the AAO, I get to update my knowledge about all of these fields.

While my private practice focuses on cataract, refractive and anterior segment surgery, my work with the residents at Olive View UCLA Medical Center covers the full spectrum of ophthalmology. I'm very happy in my current private practice, but I sure do admire my retinal colleagues and their amazing new technologies, surgical modalities and pharmacologic options.

I also enjoy connecting with old and new friends, and I'm slowly realizing that ophthalmology really is a small world. I still remember being a resident at my first AAO meeting more than 10 years ago — it was so big that I felt lost. Now when I go to the meeting, it's even bigger, but with so many friends in the eye world, I no longer feel lost. If you see me at the upcoming AAO meeting, please say hello.
