Nerds rejoice! You may soon be prescribing Google Glass
I know, I know. I just blogged on Google Glass a few weeks ago, but there’s more news.
The Italian eyewear maker Luxottica recently announced an agreement with Google to design and produce eyewear specifically for Google Glass technology. This wearable computing technology already has massive appeal to a “geek-chic” market of nerds, many of whom regularly read my blog and can’t wait to get their hands on this device. With Luxottica’s involvement, now a much broader market of consumers (read: people cooler than us) will be able to select sunglasses from brands like Oakley and Ray-Ban, which Luxottica owns, specifically designed with Glass in mind. This has several nice implications.
First, anyone with a VSP contract may be prescribing glasses and fitting them with this wearable camera/computer. Think about how cool that display will be in your optical shop! Then again, your opticians may also need tech support backup in a foreign land where they try to speak without an accent.
Bay Area startup Augmedix has already secured $3.2 million in funding to produce doctor-wearable Google Glass products to enhance EHR inputting of patient information.
Finally, I’m going to start offering “reverse LASIK,” giving back myopia to all those computer nerds I once treated, thereby rendering a perfect excuse for them to wear Google Glass now that eyewear again is going to be the newest craze.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that VSP is owned by Luxottica. VSP Vision Care is owned by VSP Global who partnered with Google to provide prescription lens coverage to Google Glass.
