Innovation at the ASCRS meeting

Like many of you, I have recently returned from the ASCRS meeting in Boston, and I have brought back some great pearls to incorporate into my surgical practice. There is a tremendous amount of innovation in ophthalmology, with contributors from all over the world.
At the ASCRS Film Festival, there were participants from 40 countries, with some countries, such as India, Japan and the U.S., very strongly represented. My favorite video, and the winner of the Film Festival Grand Prize, was from Dr. Arup Bhaumik of India, showing an innovative way of explanting an IOL.
He uses a wire snare to encircle the optic of the undesired IOL and then he withdraws the snare via an Alcon Monarch cartridge and, magically, the IOL simply refolds and collapses as it is being extracted from the anterior chamber. It is simple, clean and efficient. And Dr. Bhaumik's video was also very simple and charmingly homemade, so it made the victory over the highly polished, mega-buck entries even sweeter.
I congratulate Dr. Bhaumik for his innovative technique. And I can't help but think that perhaps it can even be improved further, and I'm sure that others will try to evolve his technique. That spirit is why there is so much innovation in ophthalmology.
