Calvin Roberts

Calvin Roberts, MD, is stepping down as senior vice president and chief medical officer of eye care at Bausch Health Companies to take over as president and CEO of Lighthouse Guild, effective April 1.

Roberts, who worked as a practicing ophthalmologist for 26 years, performing more than 10,000 cataract surgeries and 5,000 refractive and corneal surgeries, was selected to lead Lighthouse Guild after a year-long search that began when Alan R. Morse, JD, PhD, announced his retirement, according to a press release.

“At a certain point in your career, all that matters is how many people less fortunate than you can you help, and in the vision world, probably the least served are those with vision loss,” Roberts told Healio/OSN. “Lighthouse Guild has been a wonderful organization for many years, and now it’s time to bring it to the next chapter so we can impact more people’s lives in a better way.”

The organization is dedicated to addressing and preventing vision loss by providing coordinated care for eye health that includes vision rehabilitation and prevention, early detection and intervention in vision disorders.

Roberts believes his plethora of experience, both as a practicing ophthalmologist and on the industry side, has equipped him to lead Lighthouse Guild into a future that includes the advancement of technology to assist the vision impaired.

“Like never before, technology is so prime to benefit those with vision loss. But what’s missing is leadership to lead the technology advancement,” he said. “I see the Lighthouse Guild being the leader in advancement of technology to benefit the lives of those with vision loss.”

Roberts received his BA from Princeton University and his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons before completing an internship and ophthalmology residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and cornea fellowships at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Eye Research Institute.

“He is an expert and innovator who brings over 25 years of experience in eye care and the pharmacology/biotech industry,” James M. Dubin, Lighthouse Guild chairman, said in the press release. “His business expertise, industry experience and ophthalmic leadership make him the right person to take the helm as we continue to expand our commitment to reducing the burdens of vision loss.” – by Rebecca L.
