CPT codes available for Notal Vision’s home OCT system

Three new Category III codes have been established for Notal Vision’s home OCT system by the American Medical Association’s CPT Editorial Panel, according to a press release.
The CPT codes, 0604T, 0605T and 0606T, allow for billing for the device, set-up and patient education, as well as for the company’s diagnostic clinic, which provides technical support, data analyses and reports to physicians, the release said.
“This milestone marks the first step towards establishing physician and patient reimbursement for our home OCT pipeline technology,” Kester Nahen, PhD, CEO of Notal Vision, said in the release. “We applaud the AMA’s CPT Editorial panel for establishing codes for billing remote diagnostic services and patient home monitoring services. We believe that a home-based OCT will be the future of monitoring patients with wet AMD, one that allows doctors to individualize their patients’ treatment.”
The system allows patients with age-related macular degeneration to perform OCT testing at home, without the assistance of a technician. It sends reports that characterize quantitative changes in fluid to the patient’s physician.
With the CPT codes, practitioners will be able to bill for reviewing, interpreting and reporting data analyses every 30 days.
“Our next efforts will focus on proving the clinical relevance and providing valuation of our services to Medicare, Medicaid and payers,” Nahen said.

The CPT codes to report patient-initiated remote retinal OCT scans establish the structure for being able to bill for these services in the future. Medicare Administrative Contractors will decide whether to cover the services based on proof of meaningful use provided by clinical studies. The payment levels will be based on a cost analysis of the services performed by the Notal Vision Diagnostic Clinic, the future provider of the Home OCT. These services include but are not limited to the device provision, set-up and patient education on use of equipment as well as ongoing remote surveillance center patient compliance monitoring, technical support, data analyses and reports. The level of reimbursement for prescribing physicians will be based on the work values of review, interpretation and report of the data analyses provided by the Notal Vision Diagnostic Clinic. Physicians will be able to bill for the review of Home OCT reports every 30 days independent from the use of in-office OCT. It is always good for the physicians to get paid for the work we do. Having the CPT codes is a great start toward that goal.
