Swept-source OCT improves measurement accuracy

NEW YORK — Swept-source OCT provides several clinical advantages over other techniques to evaluate biometry, according to a speaker here.
“It has the advantages of being noninvasive and high speed, so obtaining images is much faster. We can collect two- and three-dimensional data in hundreds of milliseconds, so we’re getting a lot more information about the eye,” Preeya K. Gupta, MD, said at OSN New York 2019.
Several studies have shown SS-OCT biometry has the highest repeatability when compared with other methods of interferometry and reflectometry. It is the most repeatable and accurate method, which provides surgeons with better outcomes, Gupta said.
For many patients, OCT has become an important part of a premium cataract workup. Devices that incorporate SS-OCT will provide surgeons with an image at the time of acquisition of the biometry reading, Gupta said.
SS-OCT can also obtain measurements where other devices cannot because it can penetrate through dense lenses. This mean fewer A-scans for patients, which can improve clinic workflow, she said.
The technology allows for total keratometry in some devices. Total keratometry is a new measurement that combines anterior corneal measures and SS-OCT technology for the assessment of anterior and posterior corneal curvature, Gupta said.
“Swept-source OCT is now able to directly measure not only the anterior surface but the posterior cornea, and that’s sort of the wild card when it comes to astigmatism management,” she said. – by Robert Linnehan
