AAO, ASCRS create Ophthovation business innovation conferences

The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery have created Ophthovation, a joint venture that will hold two annual conferences focused on accelerating innovation in ophthalmology, according to a press release.

Ophthovation conferences will be held preceding the annual ASCRS and AAO meetings, beginning with the inaugural meeting before the 2020 ASCRS meeting on Thursday, May 14, at the Sheraton Boston in Boston. It will be chaired by Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, Edward J. Holland, MD, and Thomas W. Samuelson, MD, with Gil Kliman, MD, ophthalmologist and managing partner of InterWest Partners venture capital firm, serving as program director. A second meeting will take place before the AAO meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

“Ophthovation is truly a novel opportunity to cultivate and accelerate a variety of ophthalmic businesses leveraging the vast resources of AAO and ASCRS,” Kliman said in the release. “Using new formats and enhanced networking opportunities, it will bring together large and small companies, institutional investors, and entrepreneurial ophthalmologists and researchers. This unique cross-pollination of innovative talent, clinical acumen and financial expertise will expedite delivery of new treatments to patients around the world.”
