NEW YORK — The 2019 Waring Medal was awarded to Hamed Hatami-Marbini, PhD, for his study on the influence of microstructure on the stiffening effects of corneal cross-linking.

Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, presented the award for editorial excellence to Hatami-Marbini for his significant contribution to the Journal of Refractive Surgery.

“I would like to thank our selection committee for bestowing this honor on me. It was great, and a great surprise,” Hatami-Marbini said at OSN New York 2019.

Hatami-Marbini’s study, “Influence of microstructure on stiffening effects of corneal cross-linking treatment,” investigated the stiffening effects of cross-linking on tensile properties of anterior and posterior corneal flaps. Hatami-Marbini and colleagues found the stiffening effects depend significantly on the composition and microstructure of corneal extracellular matrix.

Hatami-Marbini said the next step in his research will be to address the same issue on the diseased tissue of corneas with keratoconus. – by Robert Linnehan
